LED Medical Diagnostics Inc. (“LED Medical”, “the Company”), a developer of tissue visualization detection technologies for the medical industry, is pleased to report that it is again a strategic supporter of Oral Cancer Awareness Month in April. Other strategic supporters of the initiative, which is being organized by the Oral Cancer Foundation, include the American Dental Association and the Academy of General Dentistry.
The Oral Cancer Foundation is encouraging dental practices across the United States and Canada to offer free oral cancer screenings for at least three hours one day during the month. Through this group collaboration, the Foundation hopes to see this disease brought to the attention of as many individuals as possible, and have the disease get the national media attention necessary to meaningfully raise public awareness. To supplement this effort, LED Medical Diagnostics is encouraging dental practices that use the company’s VELscope® Vx enhanced oral assessment device to participate in the initiative.
“Oral Cancer Awareness Month has proven to be a very effective way for dental practitioners to call attention to the threat oral cancer represents to virtually every adult worldwide,” said Peter Whitehead, founder and CEO of LED Medical Diagnostics. “It can also be a great opportunity for dental practices, particularly those who use our state-of-the-art VELscope technology, to demonstrate their sincere concern for the oral and systemic health of their patients.”
Oral cancer screenings are more important than ever. Oral cancer is one of the few cancers that are on the rise in the U.S. When found early, oral cancers have a five-year survival rate of over 80 percent. Unfortunately, most oral cancers are found in late stages, when the five-year survival rate plummets to about 50 percent. Late stage diagnosis can be greatly reduced through increased public awareness of these facts, and both LED Dental and the Oral Cancer Foundation believe that a national program of opportunistic screenings is the best means of creating that awareness. Like other cancer screenings, such as those for cervical, skin, prostate, colon and breast cancer, oral cancer screenings can be an effective means of finding cancer at its earliest and most easily treatable stages.
The company’s LED Dental subsidiary launched its enhanced oral assessment device into the dental market in late 2006. Over the past six-and-one-half years, the device has become the world’s number one adjunctive screening device for oral cancer and other oral disease, with over 25 million exams conducted. In late 2012, the company enhanced both its sales revenues and its profitability by assigning exclusive global dental market responsibility for selling and marketing its latest generation VELscope Vx enhanced oral assessment device to leading dental products manufacturer Den-Mat Holdings, LLC.
